How to change folder colors on your Mac

If you want to give your desktop a more colorful look or just want to play around, macOS has some features that will allow you to change the color of folders on your Mac.

Adding cool colors to folders can help you identify certain types of folders. If you absolutely want to do it today, then you've come to the right place. This quick tutorial will help you give your desktop a cool look.

How to change folder colors on your Mac?

To change the color of the folder, proceed as follows:

  • Create a folder in the location of your choice in the Finder.

You can also use an existing folder, I am using a new folder just to show you this tutorial.

  • Right click on the folder you choose and click Obtain informations.

  • Click onfolder icon next to the folder name.
  • Click on Edit then Copier in the menu bar or use the keyboard shortcut Command + C.

  • Open Spotlight Search using the Command + Space and type Preview to open thePreview app on your Mac.
  • With the Preview app open, click File -> New to clipboard from the menu bar.

The folder icon you just copied will be pasted into the preview for editing. We're just going to change the folder color and paste it back into the section Obtain informations to get the new icon in color.

  • Click on Show markup toolbar, as shown, to reveal the editing options in the preview.
  • Click on Adjust color as pictured below, it looks like a prism with a light shining through.
  • Use the sliders to change the folder icon colors to your liking.

I used the Sepia slider on the far right to add the Sepia effect to the folder. Modify the colors using the Hue, Temperature, Saturation sliders and use the other sliders.

  • Once the coloring is complete, choose Edit -> Select All in the menu bar after clicking on the image. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Command + A to select.
  • Press Command + C to copy the new folder icon.

Turn over Obtain informations tab that you opened previously.

  • Click the folder icon again, which is right next to the folder name, and press Command + V to stick the new colored folder icon over the old one.

That's it, now you have successfully changed the color of the folder. You can make this coloring to more folders if you want. You can also use other image editing tools like Photoshop if you don't want to use the built-in preview app or want more editing options.

The preview app gives you basic options to change the folder color, which is enough to explain this tutorial. Since the Preview app is the default app for viewing photos and videos on Mac, you have the option to change the default apps to your liking.
