List of phones with display refresh rate of 90Hz, 120Hz and 144Hz

A few years ago, people didn't even look at screen refresh rate when buying a smartphone – it was something they didn't care about as much. However, things have changed, and now almost every other smartphone manufacturer is rushing to come up with smoother displays. It is certain that high refresh rate panels will gradually replace regular screens, and we will see more and more brands adopting the technology in the coming times. Here, we're bringing you the best phones with 90Hz, 120Hz, and 144Hz refresh rate displays you can buy right now.

This list is regularly updated as new phones are released. You can add a bookmark to save the page in your browser.

What is refresh rate?

For starters, the number of times a screen updates its content per second is called the refresh rate of that particular panel. Simply put, it is the number of times your computer or phone screen redraws or updates the image or frame every second.

The higher the refresh rate, the smoother the display will be. It's measured in Hertz (Hz), and most smartphones and TVs today come with 60Hz screens. However, the smartphone industry is slowly shifting to 90Hz and 120Hz options.

90Hz vs 120Hz- What's the difference?

A 90Hz display refreshes the image 90 times per second, while a 120Hz display does the same 120 times per second. The higher refresh rate ensures that on-screen content updates faster, which improves the smoothness of graphic animations.

Compared to a normal display, a 90Hz panel will run smoother when scrolling the UI, browsing the web, or playing a compatible app or game. Increasing it to 120Hz will give you a much higher refresh rate, which will make things even smoother and more vivid.

It will also have less motion blur and clearer image quality. Text will be crisper and readable even while scrolling, reducing stress on your eyes. The difference will usually be noticeable during gameplay.

Best phones with a display refresh rate of 144Hz or higher

List of phones with 144 Hz display

Interestingly, 120Hz isn't the highest we've seen on smartphones. The Sharp Aquos Zero 2 was the first phone in the world to adopt a 240Hz display. While the recently launched ZTE Nubia RedMagic 5G is the one that kicks off the 144Hz segment.

Below is the list of phones with a screen of 144Hz or higher:

  • Asus ROG Phone 3
  • Asus ROG Phone 5
  • iQOO Neo3 5G
  • iQOO Z1 5G
  • Nubia RedMagic 5G
  • Nubia Play 5G
  • Mi 10T, Mi 10T Pro
  • Motorola Edge 20, Edge 20 Pro
  • Moto edge x30
  • Motorcycle Edge S30
  • Motorola Edge 30 Fusion
  • Motorola Edge 30 Ultra
  • Lenovo Legion Pro / Legion phone duel

Do you need smartphones with a 90Hz, 120Hz or 144Hz display?

High refresh rate displays have limited content scale for users to take advantage of the hardware. Only limited games and apps support the bloated refresh rates, while most videos and movies still haven't adopted the technology.

Anyway, as more and more brands switch to 90Hz, 120Hz, and even 144Hz displays, things have started to change. Still, I wouldn't suggest buying a phone just for its 90Hz or 120Hz display; for example, a 60Hz AMOLED may still be a better choice than a 90Hz LCD for many people.

So go for what suits your needs rather than blindly chasing the refresh rate. It won't be wrong to say that 60 Hz will soon be a thing of the past.
