Telegram has announced some important updates to its email client across different platforms. One is a pretty big upgrade to video calling and the other is UI and design.
The video calling side of things in Telegram is getting a lot of new changes, many of which seem to be inspired by Apple's updates for FaceTime during WWDC 2021.
Telegram now benefits from support for group video calls. Users need to initiate a group voice call, then tapping the camera icon will automatically put you into a group video call. While there is no limit to the number of participants in group voice calls on Telegram, group video calls are currently limited to 30 people.
Besides just sharing your camera feed, you can also share your screen with other people while video calling. On smartphones and tablets, by default, your entire display is shared. On the desktop, users have the choice of sharing the entire screen or a particular window.
Telegram has also added an updated background noise cancellation feature to voice chats. Like Apple, Telegram now offers to disable this option if you want to send all the audio captured by the microphone without any modification.
On tablets and desktops, video calls provide a large split-screen view of the video grid as well as the participant list. Group video calls on the desktop are also a separate window so you can do other things without minimizing the video call.
Apart from the video calling features, Telegram also adds several changes to the user interface. There is now support for animated backgrounds, which is a first for a messaging app. The background features rotating color patterns that come alive every time you send a message. You can choose your own colors and patterns in the settings. Telegram says these resources are quite light, so they won't slow down your performance or consume too much power.
User-created animated backgrounds can also be shared with others.
The message sending animation has also been updated and text, emoji, and stickers now slide smoothly from the text box to the chat, like iMessage.
Along with these changes, there are also two new app icons on iOS, login info reminders, a bot menu for browsing the list of commands, and even more animated emoji. Telegram is also releasing tools for developers to build apps that allow users to generate personalized unique stickers and import them into Telegram with just one click.
