Review Xiaomi Redmi 9

Redmi phones are where it all started for Xiaomi and the series is still by far the most important in the business. It has grown tremendously over the years, with the highest members being able to trade punches with some of the most powerful flagships on the market. Yet pure Redmi phones still stick to the same formula - deliver a solid smartphone experience on the tightest budget possible, thus maximizing value for money.

The new Redmi 9 is arguably closer to its Note counterpart - the Redmi Note 9 - than any of its predecessors. It has the same 1080p large display and a very similar MediaTek chipset, and while the cameras have undergone downgrades, they cover the same focal lengths, providing essentially the same kind of versatility.

This helped bring the price down to just over $ 120 - roughly 10% of what an iPhone 11 Pro Max costs. Quite tempting when you consider that the Redmi 9 finally upgrades to a 1080p display and comes with a big battery that should last you for days.

Before we unbox the Redmi 9, let's take a closer look at its key specs.

This reveals another thing that the Redmi Note 9 lacks - the water repellent coating. This will hardly be held against the Redmi 9, as this is hardly a feature to be expected in the entry-level segment. And it's not like the Note 9 has an IP rating either, so you better be careful around the pool.

Unpacking the Redmi 9

The Redmi 9 is a budget phone, but you still get a clear case in its retail packaging that fits the Redmi 9 well. The phone also has a rather inexpensive pre-applied screen film for a premium. extra scratch protection, but it was a huge stain magnet and we got rid of it quickly.

We like the protective case, but be aware that it comes with a waterproof cap for the connectivity port. And while it protects against water, it was rather irritating to remove it every time we needed to charge the Redmi 9.

The entry-level nature of the phone is betrayed by the 10W charger in the box, although it does support 18W charging. If you want to maximize that potential, you'll need to get your own charger, but if you're staying overnight anyway, that doesn't make much of a difference. And the phone has the current USB-C port, so you can even have a suitable charger handy.
