YouTube picture in picture not working on iOS 14? Here is how to fix

Although the YouTube app on iOS does not support picture-in-picture mode, it was quite possible to watch videos in a floating window through the mobile site on the Safari browser. However, YouTube fixed it soon, forcing users to purchase the premium for the PiP to work on their iPhones.

The next possible workaround was to use YouTube in desktop mode in Safari. However, that doesn't seem to work anymore either. So how do we use YouTube in PiP on iPhones? Here are some quick working methods to fix YouTube picture in picture not working on iOS 14.

Method 1 - YouTube Premium

The first solution is to subscribe to the YouTube Premium subscription. YouTube does not appear to block picture-in-picture for premium users. So, if you have a subscription, you can watch videos in a floating video through Safari without any problem.

Method 2 - Using the PiP shortcut (works with the YouTube app)

The easiest way to get picture-in-picture for YouTube to work on your iPhone is to use the custom YouTube PiP shortcut. For this we will need the Scriptable and Shortcuts application.

Allow unknown shortcuts

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and select shortcuts.
  3. Here, activate the toggle for Allow unknown shortcuts.
  4. Is it grayed out? Open the Shortcuts app and install any shortcut.
  5. Then go back to the shortcuts in the settings and activate the toggle.

Install the Sriptable and YouTube PiP shortcut

  1. Install the Scriptable app from the App Store.
  2. Then open the YouTube PiP Shortcut link on your iPhone.
  3. Here click on Get a shortcut.
  4. Once you are redirected to the Shortcuts app, scroll down.
  5. Then click on Add an untrusted shortcut.

Play YouTube in PiP on iPhone

  1. Now open the YouTube app and play a video.
  2. Click it Share then select Suites.
  3. Click on YouTube PiP from the available options.
  4. Then press Okay when prompted, it's a one-time thing.

Once you tap on it, the YouTube video will start playing in picture-in-picture floating mode on iOS 14. Here you will also have the option to change the video playing speed and resolution in the mini player.

Instead of clicking Close, make sure you press the Home button or slide your finger up to go to the iPhone home screen and continue with PiP mode. You can drag the mini-player window anywhere you like, use search shortcuts, play and pause the video as usual.

The shortcut will work for both the YouTube app and the YouTube mobile site in the browser. To use PiP with YouTube videos played in Safari or any other browser, click the Share button and select YouTube PiP.

Method 3 - Stadium Navigator

  1. Install Stadium Full Screen Browser from the App Store.
  2. As soon as you open the app, you will be prompted to change the page settings.
  3. Paste here "https://m.youtube.com" in the Primary url box.
  4. Then copy and paste "Mozilla / 5.0 (Android 4.4; Mobile; rv: 41.0) Gecko / 41.0 Firefox / 41.0:" in the User agent string box.
  5. Then scroll down and make sure Require full screen video is authorized.
  6. Click on Fact in the upper right corner.
  7. The browser will now automatically open the YouTube mobile site.
  8. Play a YouTube video, do it full screen.
  9. Then click on the Picture in picture button.

That's all. Now you can watch any YouTube video you want in picture-in-picture mode while using other apps simultaneously. All without having to buy YouTube Premium or jailbreak your device.
