How do I change the theme or color of DMs on Instagram?
Facebook merged Instagram Messenger and Instagram DMs. You can now message your Facebook friends from Instagram once you've signed up. You can also change chat theme or color accent in Instagram DMs for Android and iPhone.
How to update Instagram's messenger
Only if you update Instagram's cross-platform messaging feature (which lets you message your Facebook friends directly from Instagram) will the new chat customization features become available. This update cannot be undone.
First, update your Instagram app from Apple App Store and Google Play Store. You'll see a banner describing the cross-platform messaging update when you open the app. This means you have access to the feature.
This feature can be activated in "Settings". To do this, go to the "Profile" tab.
Next, click the hamburger menu button in the upper right corner.
Choose the “Settings” option.
Select the “Update Email” option.
Click here to choose the "Update" button.
The messaging feature has been updated. Return to the Instagram homepage to confirm. You will now see a Messenger icon at the top of the screen instead of the traditional Instagram DM icon.
How to change chat theme and highlight color in Instagram DMs.
You can now change the chat theme and color for any individual Instagram DM conversation.
To view all conversations, click on the “Messenger” icon at the top right of the Instagram homepage screen.
Choose a conversation topic you want to edit.
Now click on the “i” icon in the upper right corner.
Click on the “Theme” button.
There are a few themes at the top of the screen. Choose one.
You will then see the color options under the “Colors and Gradients” section.
Background and chat bubbles will be changed by themes. The chat color only changes the chat bubbles, the background remains the same.
You can choose a chat color or theme to use in the conversation. You will inform the other participants and the theme will be changed for everyone.
Instagram DMs now have a gradient background for chat bubbles. This is the new default theme. You can choose to return to the classic gray background by selecting the "Direct Classic" option in the Themes section.
